Trip- report November 2013.

November 2013

In addition to exchanging ideas with the people involved and checking on the projects and information, the trips to Sosúa also bring other positive things with them. During her stay, Sylvia gets in touch with Dutch people as well as, for example, Canadians who are on holiday there. Some of these tourists are looking for a good destination for school supplies or clothing they have brought with them. When requested, Sylvia then visits the Colegio Asher with them. Visitors are always deeply impressed by what they see there and want to contribute something.
An elderly Canadian lady, Nelly, who frequently visits Sosúa and has great social empathy, visited the Colegio Asher with Sylvia in May 2013. She recently telephoned Sylvia, because she is now going to fill a couple of boxes with aid supplies for the DR, which will be transported by container ship from Toronto to Puerto Plata. Some of these supplies are for the children of the Colegio Asher.

Although this is outside our Dutch foundation, through these contacts in Sosúa our aim is also achieved, which is to provide assistance to underprivileged children in the DR.

October 2013Willemijn Berkley, niece of Sylvia, designs and makes bags and rucksacks with the brand name MUK. She will make about 5 rucksacks and donate these for the youngest schoolchildren in the Dominicans Republic.

Vouchers for the Camu kids

August 2013

During the past two weeks, hundreds of underprivileged children received vouchers for school uniforms, shoes, rucksacks, and school supplies, which the Sosua Kids Ass. issued at various distribution points, such as in Sosúa, Camu, La Cienaga, and Sabaneta. The new school year starts in mid-August.

Despite the economic downturn, our board has decided to expand the number of children by 20, who are able to go to school with the aid of our foundation. These children live in the poor village of Camu in the Dominican Republic. In cooperation with the Sosua Kids Association in Sosúa, we will commit ourselves to help these children go to school for six years. This means that we are aiming to achieve an additional 20 x EUR 50 = EUR 1,000 a year through fundraising. We remain actively committed to achieving our goal of assisting as many children as possible to go to school in the Dominican Republic.
We will keep you informed of further developments in our Camu Project.

Report from Janet, president of the Sosúa Ass. in Sosúa:

"After all the distributions were finished, there was still a bit of money left. So were able to help a few more kids. I had been thinking of a women with 4 kids out in Veragua,  who had been at the distribution point looking for help, but none of her kids were on our list. schooluniforms 2012-16We told her that we would try to help the following year. As no other member of the Sosua Kids was available, Jocelyn, a helpful friend, and I went out to Veragua.
There were 2 other kids from another family that we gave vouchers to first, and then to the 2 school age kids of this mother, they were enrolled in school, but with no shoes and no supplies, wearing rubber thongs on their feet (totally against the department of education rules) and cast off bits of uniforms from a neighbour.  I took their information and Jocelyn took pictures with their numbers for our records, as the picture taking was going on I noticed that the mother had her head down and I thought why isn't she paying attention, she should be very happy for this! Then as she lifted her head I realized that she was crying. She was so overwhelmed with these vouchers from Sosua Kids for her children she was crying.
I thought about how she must have been worrying and worrying about the lack of things that her children needed for school. Jocelyn and I talked about how happy we were that we had made to trip to Veragua, all the way back to Sosua".
